NYX City Set in Rome – Review and Swatches

Hey guys
Its day two of our week of eyeshadow palette reviews and today I share my thoughts on the face palette by NYX. As you can probably guess from the name, that they all have an individual city name and I’ll be reviewing the city kit in Rome.
This is the very first NYX eyeshadow, highlight and blush palette I own so I was quite excited to test it out because I know so many beauty bloggers and makeup artists rave about this brand. I own a few NYX products and pretty happy with the quality of their products. My favourite has to be their highlight and contour pro palette, their glitter glue/primer and their blush in the shade rose gardens.
The NYX city set collection is a complete face palette that contains 4 eyeshadows, a blush, highlighter and a lippie. NYX had an up to 60% off sale not too long ago, so I figured I’d take advantage of this sale to try out this face palette that looked so intriguing.

Packaging

I adore the packaging, it’s quite vibrant and has a trendy, youthful yet practical feel to it. The outer casing is a hard magnetic cardboard that feels pretty durable and has this huge great quality mirror on the left side. I also love that they have all the details of the products at the back of the packaging.

Eyeshadows

I immediately gravitated towards this palette when I saw the shade of the lipstick and the eyeshadows. These shades are beautiful and right up my alley. The shades range from gold, peach to purple.

I’m so bummed because the quality of the eyeshadows isn’t that great. They are quite chalky, lack pigment so I find that I have to build the colour up quite a bit in order to get the desired pigmentation. The eyeshadows blend ok, not the best but also not the worst I’ve used but the colours themselves don’t translate to the eyes the way they do when swatched on the arm. The gold shade looks and feels more like a pressed pigment, sort of a glitter, so it doesn’t apply well without the help of a setting spray or a glitter glue/primer. Both purple shades when you look at them, seem to have shimmer in them but the shimmer doesn’t translate to the eyelids so I’m not sure why these shimmer particles have been added to the eyeshadows. These purple shades also look pretty vibrant in the actual pans but when applied to the eyes they seem watered down and very dull.
I’ve watched a few youtube videos where gurus reviewed most of the city sets and this one, unfortunately, fell short. I’m not sure why this one lacked pigmentation but it seems this wasn’t the case with the other palettes.

Blush

The blush is a stunning natural tone shade and has just enough pigment and can be built up. I love these kinds of blushes as I’m able to control how much I apply.

Highlighter

The highlighter has a sort of a peachy/light pink tone to it, which I love but it isn’t as buttery soft and blinding. It can be built up but you still won’t get an extremely shining highlight. This is great for an everyday kind of highlighter as it’s quite subtle.

Soft Matte Lip Cream

The lippie has to be my favourite and this shade is described as a medium nude with red undertones. This is the very first time I’ve tried their soft matte lip cream lippies and OMG, I’m in love. The formula is so lightweight, applies beautifully and is long wearing. The finish is stunning as it settles to a comfortable matte and reminds me a lot of the Colourpop blotted lips. I so badly wanna add more of these to my collection.

Overall thoughts

I absolutely love the concept of these palettes. The fact that you can have a full face with just one palette is super convenient and perfect for travelling.
I’m quite disappointed with the city set in Rome and don’t even know if I would go out of my way to try any of the other sets. If you own any of the others then kindly let me know if they are different to this one in terms of quality.
I quite like the blush, highlighter (even though it’s quite subtle ) and the lippie is my absolute favourite.
I, unfortunately, wouldn’t recommend this specific set and happy that I didn’t pay the full price or else I would’ve been more disappointed.
I’m heading over to “An Ordinary Gal‘s” post to read her thoughts on the NYX Ultimate Warm Neutrals palette. Let’s hope she had a better experience with her palette.
Here is a look I created using this face palette. How absolutely stunning is this lippie?

Hope you guys enjoyed this review. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s review where we’ll be reviewing an international drugstore brand that so many beauty YouTubers absolutely love.
