Brand Review: Skin Functional

A skincare company that’s quickly taking the local skincare industry by storm. How exciting is this? Hey, my beauties. It’s been a while since I’ve written a blog post of any sort. For those who don’t follow me on any of my social platforms, I have some big news to share. We’re expecting a baby girl and are due in January 2022.

Most moms would know that pregnancy brings about all sorts of symptoms and little niggles that one never experienced before. Well for me, it was hormonal breakouts. I’ve never experienced anything like this and needed to do research on how to safely treat it.

There are also several skincare ingredients one has to avoid while you’re pregnant, so I needed to be very careful.

After reading many reviews, I finally got to jotting down my morning and evening pregnancy skincare regimen. I followed this religiously and am so happy that my skin has calmed down. Heavy breakouts are a thing of the past (but perhaps this was also just a 1st-trimester thing). Marks that were left from previous breakouts have faded and my skin is looking smoother, brighter and more youthful.

Let me fill you in on my secret.

My skincare journey with Skincare Functional

Skin Functional sent over the blemish corrector and the inflamed red blemish serums to test and review.

I’m not new to the brand. My friend Simone over @simone_anordinarygal did an unboxing of the Blemish Corrector a while back and I recall being intrigued by the brand, particularly the packaging as it reminded me a lot of The Ordinary. A few weeks passed and I checked in for an update on her experience and she had only good things to say.

I took a leap of faith and swapped some of my favourite serums from The Ordinary to test a few from Skin functional. I’ve been using their serums for over a year and have repurchased a few of them several times.

These are some of the serums I’ve used and swear by.

  • Anti-Oxidant Complexion Firmer – 10% Ascorbic Acid + 3% Ferulic Acid
  • Multi-Tasking Fixer – 10% Azelaic Acid
  • Dark Mark Management – 2% Alpha Arbutin

(Let me know if you would like me to share my thought on these three)

Blemish corrector – 10% Niacinamide

Product information

10% Niacinamide reduces blemishes, the appearance of enlarged pores and sebum production.

Significant suppression of sebum with added anti-blemish and anti-inflammation benefits. Normalises skin cell turnover.

  • Pores / blackheads
  • Blemishes
  • Oiliness

My experience

This serum has a slightly thickish consistency that spreads and absorbs easily. And although it has a slightly thickish texture, I appreciate that it absorbs without leaving a tacky or sticky feeling on the skin. This is great since it won’t interfere with makeup wear.

It’s a water-soluble vitamin that works with the natural substances in your skin to help strengthen its barrier.

I’ve in the past used it in the morning but since I had to deal with hormonal breakouts, I decided to use it in the morning and evening (as suggested).

It calmed down my red and inflamed breakouts, reduced my blemishes and minimised my oil production.

Inflamed red blemishes – 5% Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate

Product Information

Superior treatment in efficacy and in reduction rates of inflammatory and non-inflammatory breakouts. This is a less potent form of vitamin C and is generally safe for all skin types.

This Antioxidant has amazing benefits such as :

  • Neutralize skin
  • damaging free radicals
  • boosts collagen production
  • evens skin tone
  • and has antimicrobial benefits.

My Experience

The consistency of this serum is pretty liquidy. It feels lightweight, absorbs easily and like the niacinamide doesn’t leave a tacky feeling on the skin. So also perfect to use under makeup.

Sodium ascorbyl phosphate is a water-soluble vitamin C derivative and is ideal for acne inflammation/acne-prone skin. It’s also a more stable form of Vitamin C, which means it’s less likely to cause irritation. I consider this an effective natural acne treatment. A win in my books since I already had inflamed skin and needed to stay clear of actives that would worsen my condition.

My skin is looking brighter and it’s helped fade discolouration caused by the breakouts.

Final Thoughts

I would highly recommend Skin Functional products. Not only are they extremely well-priced but their services are impeccable. Their site is user friendly and filled with loads of information to guide you on your skincare journey. And if you’re still unsure, you can contact them directly and they will assist you without hesitation.

They also have starter and trial kits available for different skin concerns and this is an ideal pack to test your skin tolerability.

I’ve enjoyed using both products and have already seen a huge improvement in my skin. Continued and consistent use is obviously the key to even better results, so please follow me on my socials for a before and after, after another month or so.

This brand is making waves and I know so many of you are loving their products. Let me know which has been your go-to serum, or which products you’ve introduced to your skincare that has changed your skin for the better?

Ps. Skin Functional has gone pink for the month of October to commemorate the #pinkdrive in spreading awareness of breast cancer and early detection. So I encourage you to regularly check your breasts and go for gender-related cancer screenings.

XoXo
