Top 5 Favourite Nude Lipsticks for Medium to Dark Skin Tones
Hey Stunners
I hope you have all adjusted to the cold weather and keeping warm. I’m quite excited about today’s post. I’m sure you can already gather from the heading what it’ll be about. The most exciting part of it is that I’ve collaborated with a fellow blogger friend Miss Dhanusha ( IG: miss_dhanusha , @missdhanusha ( Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat)) and we’ve decided to share our top 5 nude lipsticks for medium to dark skin tones. Please read her Top 5 favourite nude lipsticks post here.
Miss Dhanusha is a beauty and lifestyle blogger, I’m sure many of you know her and follow her, if you don’t, please do go and have a look at her blog and follow her on other social platforms, I know you’ll love her as much as I do.
My Skin Tone
I know this seems like a strange heading because some ladies may be under the impression that you just need to know your skin tone when it comes to choosing foundation and concealers ( I was guilty of this not so long ago) but it’s equally important when it comes to lipsticks colours, especially nude shades. The last thing you want is to look completely washed out or like a ghost and this can sadly happen when you wear a nude lipstick that’s way too light for your skin tone.
I have medium skin tone with warm, yellow undertone.
For reference, I’m in these shades in the following foundations:
- M.A.C Studio Fix Fluid – NC41
- M.A.C Prolongwear in NC40
- Urban Decay All Nighter – between 5.0 – 6.0
- Estee Lauder Double Wear – Cashew
- Maybelline Fit Me! Matte and Poreless – 228 (Soft Tan)
- Milani Conceal + Perfect 2 in 1 – 05 (Warm Beige)
- Tarte Amazonian Clay in Tan Honey
My Top 5 Favourite Nude Lipsticks & 1 Lipliner For Medium Skin Tone
These 5 lipsticks are some of my favourite nude lipsticks that I tend to gravitate to on most days when I don’t know which shade to grab. There is one drugstore lippie, one nude lipliner and the rest of the lipsticks are considered “high end”. The nude lipstick trend will never fade, there is no easier shortcut to looking sexy and sophisticated with the least amount of effort. What I love is how easily they can be worn with just some mascara for a daytime look and a smokey eye for night.
Essence Longlasting Lipstick – Cool Nude
I was super chuffed when I came across this lipstick. I was looking at adding a few Essence products to my collection just to try them out and figured that this was the perfect opportunity to try out one of their lipsticks.
Cool Nude is described as a warm toned nude. I love that it’s the perfect everyday neutral lipstick that you can easily grab and apply without worrying about going over your lip line. They are creamy and have a satiny finish with just enough shine to it and the best part is that it feels super moisturising on the lips.
I was quite surprised by the lasting power of this lipstick considering the price I paid for it. You could easily go about 2-3 hours before needing to reapply. I don’t mind this because it really feels super comfortable on the lips. The Essence Trend Edition I Heart Nude lipsticks retail for R 39,95 each at Dis-Chem stores.
MAC Lipstick – Hug Me
I’ve done a MAC Pinky Nude collection post a while ago, you can read about it here. My love for these lipsticks is no secret. I absolutely love them and will continue grabbing any opportunity to add more to my growing collection.
Hug me is described as a flesh toned nude pink in a lustre finish. Lustre finishes are a perfect combination of gloss and lipstick. It has just enough gloss to give that lush look to the lips and the pigmentation is great. I find that the lustre finishes have the lowest staying power of all the MAC finishes. You can get about 2-3 hours of wear before needing to reapply but I really don’t mind this at all. I’m quite fond of this finish because it’s super moisturising so every time I reapply I feel like I’m taking care of my lips.
These lipsticks retail for R240.00 and you can find them at any MAC store, MAC online store and selected Edgars stores.
MAC Lipstick – Velvet Teddy
This is another shade I simply can’t live without. It is my favourite nude lipstick of all time, HANDS DOWN! Velvet Teddy is described as a deep-toned beige and it looks absolutely stunning on my medium (NC41) skin tone. It’s a matte finish but one of the most comfortable mattes I’ve come across. It applies smoothly, extremely opaque and is non-drying. It does transfer a little bit but because it’s so pigmented you can get a good 5-6 hours of wear before having to touch up again.
This also retails for R240.00 and you can find them at MAC stores, the MAC online store and selected Edgars stores.
MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick – Burnt Spice
So I have to start by saying that I was quite sceptical when it came to the MAC Retro Matte Liquid lipsticks.I bought one sometime last year and was terribly disappointed. It was extremely drying on the lips and the texture was just weird. I couldn’t stand it at all. When I heard that they reformulated their liquid lippies I was quite keen and as always did some “research” and was surprised by how many people loved them and of course, I had to try them. I own a few of these and I Luuurve them!
Burnt Spice is described as a creamy dirty rose and this is exactly what it looks like on me. It’s so strange because it looks much darker on lighter skin tones but is the perfect medium warm pinked peachy nude shade for me. The formula is very lightweight and mousse like which makes applying it great. It is slightly drying but nothing crazy or as bad as they use to be. The pigmentation is insane so you can achieve complete opacity with just one light sweep over the lips.
I also really love the doe foot applicator. It’s designed with a pointy bit that makes it super easy for you to get into the corners of your lips as well as outline your lips with minimal mess.
The staying power is incredible, once you apply it, it stays put. I get a good 8-9 hours wear with drinking and eating throughout the day.
These Retro Matte Liquid lipsticks retail for R300.
Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipsticks – Celebrity Skin
I’ve done my Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipstick collection post here and this shade was included in that post. Please do have a read because I describe the packaging, formula and scent in detail.
Jeffree Star’s Liquid lipsticks are one of my favourite formulae. Celebrity Skin is described as a soft brown nude with a peachy undertone. This is one of my favourite nude liquid lippies. On days when I want to wear a nude liquid lipstick and just don’t know which colour to wear I gravitate to this one. It’s definitely my most worn shade.
These Liquid Lipsticks retail for $18 on the Jeffree Star website and they’re also available from Pink Cosmetics for R550.
MAC Lip Pencil – Boldly Bare
Thanks to a friend I was able to add a few MAC lip pencils to my collection. I’ve always been curious about them but they were just a little out of my budget. I think it’s a little steep to pay R230 for a lip pencil. I must say though, these are such great quality lip pencils. I can see why so many people love them. The packaging is sleek, MAC is known for this and you get a good amount of product. This specific Lip Pencil has a matte finish and looks a little more brown/orange-y on my hands (Swatch below), but on my lips, it’s way more pink as you can see in the lip swatch picture.
The wearability of this Lip Pencil is amazing. It’s not too drying and applies quite well all over the lips. I wear it with most of the lipstick shades I’ve mentioned above just to neatly outline my lips. I also use it with even lighter nudes to create an ombre lip or just add dimension to the lips. Aaand doesn’t it just look great even by itself? Lol! Just Saying!
Final Thoughts
These shades may look very similar but as you can see from the swatches, they are actually quite different and they look different on the lips as well. These are my favourite nudes and ones I’ll definitely repurchase.
I know so many ladies love their nude lipsticks and they do say that one can never have enough nude lippies. Which are your favourite? Ones you simply can’t live without? If we have similar skin tones are there perhaps ones you would suggest I definitely try? I would absolutely love to hear from you guys!
Toodles Stunners!! Xx

I love the MAC Velvet Teddy. I also love Essence Velvet Matt 08 or essence Long Lating Natural Beauty 07. Revlon Color Stay Ultimade Suede, 015 Runway. Love the Color but tends to dry out quick and needs a bit of gloss. My favourite quick Go to anytime for a nude lip, sometimes even a ombre lip is Essence Lipliner 05 SoftBerry & Essence Lipliners 11 in nude then I pair it with Essence Velvet stick Matt Lipcolour 02 Peony Star along the liner of my lips and 01Nude hero to fill in. Blends great together. The Gossy stick 02 ClearNude is in my bag for on the run anytime 😉
